Starting January, I took part in my very first Instagram challenge, the #abnewyearstashchallenge. Purpose of the challenge was to round up everything from a skincare category, both open and unopened, to share short reviews and, of course, take toll of how much product was actually hidden in those dusty drawers of yours.

Safe to say, I learned a lot about myself (“Hi, my Name is Anne and I have too many acids“) and about other peoples skincare routines.

One thing though left me a little confused: The difference between lotions, light creams, day creams, night creams and sleeping masks. Marketing aside, just judging by ingredients, a serum rich in emollients and humectants is no different to a lotion. Which, incidentally, is sometimes used to decribe something much heavier than my regular moisturizer aka day cream.

Case in point? The Asambeauty Vitamin E Skin Smoothing Serum *. It is called serum, but call it lotion and I wouldn´t disagree either.

What Asambeauty claims

This luxurious serum contains 10% of the scientifically proven antioxidant Vitamin E. It smoothes the skin and protects from environmental stress and premature skin ageing. High quality hydrating ingredients like cold pressed grape seed oil and squalane nourish and add to the smooth feeling.

Facts

Prize and size

One bottle contains 50 ml and retails for 19,75 € on the website here. It is an airtight pump, my favorite kind of packaging.

Texture and smell

Very lightweight, one and a half pumps are enough to cover face, neck and décolleté. It has the same light, fruity scent as the corresponding cream.

Application and effects

I have used it both morning and night and am happy to report that it sinks in easily without stickiness or piling. My skin felt hydrated, plump and silky.

Ingredients

Favorable ingredients
  • Tocopheryl Acetate: More stable form of Vitamin E, antioxidant
  • Squalane: Moisturizing, non-oily oil, natural in skin
  • Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil: Moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidant and linoleic acid
  • Butylene Glycol: Humectant
  • Phospholipids: Part of cellular membrane, repairs skins barrier
  • Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory
  • Sphingolipids: Strengthening lipid barrier, thus helping to retain moisture
  • Ascorbyl palmitate: Vitamin C ester, more stable
  • Tocopherol: Vitamin E, antioxidant
  • Glucose: Humectant
  • Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides citrate: Emollient
Other ingredients
  • Methylpropanediol: Enhances the penetration of other ingredients
  • Lecithin: Emulsifier
  • Sodium Polyacrylate: Thickening, can be irritating
  • Hydroxyethylcellulose: Lubricant, thickening
  • Propylene Glycol: Solvent
  • Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer: Stabilizer
  • Potassium Sorbate: Preservative
  • Sodium Benzoate: Preservative, should not be mixed with Vitamin C as it could form benzene, a carcinogen. Highly unlikely in the amounts used in skincare, but some people may prefer to avoid it.
  • Ethylhexylglycerin: Preservative
  • Phenoxyethanol: Preservative
Unfavorable Ingredients
  • Pentylene Glycol: widely used as a humectant, but has been reported recently as potential trigger for contact dermatitis. Evidence is still low, as there are only case reports published
  • Parfum (Fragrance)

This ingredient list has me convinced. Yes, I could do without the added fragrance, but the mixture of Vitamin E and (a little) Vitamin C, humectants, emollients and repairing ingredients like squalene and phospholipids are what I look for in my skincare.

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

All of them.

Would I repurchase?

Yes.

It is a perfect lightweight serum that delivers without breaking the bank.

Who do I recommend it to?

Antioxidants are important right from the start, so this serum is great to use for young skin as well as more mature ones that will benefit from the repairing and hydrating ingredients even more.

Very dry skins may not find this rich enough, but normal to oily skin types will be able to use this as part of their routines.
