Caudalie Vinoperfect Concentrating Brightening Essence – Valkyries

I know I am (once again) completely off trend here, but I just don´t understand the need to make everything “Asian beauty”

Not that I think the Asian Beauty community isn´t noteworthy, or that I would deny incorporating a few bits into my routine as well.

It is just that I firmly believe that people adapt to their surroundings and way of living, and that this influences their needs.

Not the most basic ones, obviously, I mean there are toilets all around the world – but you get what I am saying here.

Just look at me:

I am 1,72 m, have a strong frame, blonde hair, curves and love dairy.

I am by all means more Valkyrie than Geisha.

And that is perfectly fine. It just gets awkward if I forcefully try to adapt to a Geisha way of life.

Strictly speaking skincare here. I would look as weird trying to blow the steerhorn as I would trying to play the shamisen.

So at first I was a little surprised that Caudalie, obviously a French skincare brand, would claim to be inspired by Asian beauty when they released the Caudalie Vinoperfect Concentrated Brightening Essence. But Mathilde Thomas did live in Asia for quite a bit, so I guess it is only natural that she got inspired there. So let´s see if this inspiration lead to Asian beauty fit for a Valkyrie.

What Caudalie Claims

Inspired by the Asian skincare routine, this lightweight, refined formula is both gentle and effective, leaving skin feeling smoothed, plumped and illuminated.

Glycolic Acid works to eliminate dead skin cells, whilst extracts from White Peony revitalizes the skin to reveal a more even, healthy-glow. Enriched with Caudalie’s signature grape water, the Vinoperfect Concentrated Brightening Essence also contains hydrating, soothing and moisturizing properties for a beautifully flawless complexion.

The fluid formula penetrates the skin almost instantaniously, preparing the skin for the active anti-dark spot ingredients present in the Vinoperfect Radiance Serum*.

Facts

Prize and size

One bottle (frosted glass, pretty, but not travel friendly) contains 150 ml and retails for 28,60 € on the website here.

Texture and smell

Looks like water, feels like water and smells fresh, but subtle.

Application and effects

I pour a little bit into my hands and pat it over face and neck, you could use a cotton pad though if you prefer. Gentle enough to be used daily it reminds me of the pixi Glow Tonic (Review) or the Avon Perfect Skin Daily Facial Splash (Review).

As someone that uses chemical exfoliants religiously for many years, I did not notice and changes in my skin when I switched to this one.

  • Glycerin: Humectant, draws moisture to the skin
  • Methylpropanediol: Enhances the penetration of other ingredients
  • Glycolic Acid: AHA, exfoliates dead skin cells, slightly improves collagen production
  • Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside: Gentle surfactant
  • Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice: Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols
  • Caprylyl Glycol: Emollient
  • Citric Acid: AHA

Other ingredients
  • Citrus Aurantium Amara Flower Water: Fragrance
  • Sodium Hydroxide: pH adjuster, can be irritating
  • Sodium Benzoate: Preservative, should not be mixed with Vitamin C as it could form benzene, a carcinogen. Highly unlikely in the amounts used in skincare, but some people may prefer to avoid it

  • Sodium Phytate: Chelating Agent
Unfavorable Ingredients
  • Linalool/Limonene: potential irritants, naturally occurring in essential oils

The ingredient list gives it away: This is an acid toner, with Glycolic Acid as the main „active ingredient“. Other than that nothing really stands out to me. They do use Grape Water instead of regular water, so you´ll get more antioxidants with this one and don´t use alcohol to stabilize the formula, but these things wouldn´t make me run out and repurchase immediately.

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

It is lightweight, absorbs instantly and contains Glycolic Acid to exfoliate and thus brighten and even out the skin tone.

Would I repurchase?

No.

My main acid at the moment is Salicylic Acid, so I don´t need this one, and on top of that I think that while it is nice, it is not superior to other gentle exfoliating toners out there.

Who do I recommend it to?

I feel like every skin benefits from an acid exfoliation step, and if you aren´t acne prone and not overly sensitive, glycolic acid is a great choice.

While there might be more affordable ones out there, this one comes in beautiful packaging, lasts you a long time and does not contain alcohol. The Grape Water, though not a must have for me, is a nice added bonus.

Oh, and it comes in a duo with the Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum (Review coming up), so if you are a fan of sets, this might be for you.
