For the longest time taking care of the skin on my body was more of an afterthought than something I invested time and money in. I use my shampoo as body wash, a drugstore moisturizer afterwards and to be honest never felt like I was missing out. That changed when NERRA send me two of their four products designed to create a bathhouse ritual at home: The NERRA Body Wash and the NERRA Dry Body Oil.

The whole process is apparently inspired by the ancient bathhouse rituals people did indulge in back when having a bath at home wasn’t the norm. And while I wouldn’t want to go back to these times (I very much appreciate being able to take a quick shower whenever I feel the need to, thank you very much), I agree that our daily quick rinse lacks the special care given to the skin, something everyone that ever visited a Hammam or similar will agree makes a huge difference.

So inspired by her experience growing up in Tunisia, the brand founder Teyma Touati tried to recreate the bathhouse experience with products for at home use. But are they different from your regular shower products?

Let’s talk.

Facts about the Nerra Body Wash and Dry Body Oil

Prize and size

Let me start by telling you that the packaging of both products has a classic, but luxurious feel to them. The Body Wash comes in a metal container while the Dry Body Oil is housed in frosted glass. That more luxurious feel is reflected in the price: While you can get 250 ml of the Body Wash for 35,95 € on the website here, 100 ml of the Dry Body Oil will set you back 70,95 € on the website here.

Both products are available in two different versions, either „Jasmine Wood“ or „Unscented“. There is no difference in price point, so you can go by personal preference here. As I am very picky when it comes to fragrances (I get a headache easily if they are too overwhelming) I opted for „Fragrance-Free“ to be able to focus on how they feel on the skin. That means I do miss out on some of the sensory experience though that especially with shower products has a huge influence – keep that in mind when reading on.

Texture and smell

Both products do have the distinct smell of products that don’t use any masking fragrance: You can smell the not always pleasant odor of the ingredients used. It is subtle in both though, and doesn’t linger, so nothing that will put you off using them. When you look online at how others perceived the „Jasmine Wood“ version, it is always described as warm and subtle, making me wish now that I went for that in at least one of them.

The texture of the Body Wash was a little surprising as it is more runny than your regular shower gel. Not a liquid, still a gel, but one that could slip through your fingers if you aren’t careful. While it lathers nicely it doesn’t produce a huge amount of foam.

The Dry Oil did feel a little more oily than expected when sprayed on initially, but was easy to spread and quick to sink into the skin.

How to use the Nerra Body Wash and Dry Body Oil

Now it is pretty selfexplanatory how you use a Body Wash and a Dry Oil, so let me use this paragraph to talk a little more about the effects it had on my skin. The Body Wash, claiming to hydrate the skin while cleaning the pores, was one of the more hydrating formulas I have used indeed. Of course it isn’t comparable to the In-Shower-Creams you can buy these days – they are enough for me in summer to skip the body moisturizer – but my skin wasn’t dried out when using it liberally. If I lived in a more humid climate, it might have been enough on its own, but living in Germany I still felt the need to follow up with a mositurizer afterwards.

Or with the Dry Oil that could be used any time of the day, but in my opinon excelled when used directly after showering on still damp skin. Despite the initial oily feeling I was able to comfortably get dressed around five minutes after applying it, which is about as long as I wait after applying any type of body moisturizer. Just as a word of warning though: I did not find the spray on application to be mess-free as claimed. I rarely do. Whenever I spray a dry oil directly on my body, it inevitably gets on the bathroom tiles, turning it slippery. The solution is to spray it into your hands and apply it from there if you don’t want to risk breaking your neck.

I admit I was surprised to see Kaolin clay and Illite in the formula, I hadn’t expected that from the way it applied, but it makes sense in regard of the pore cleansing claims. Much more impressive that it still manages to be that hydrating despite those often drying ingredients. The surfactants you find belong to the group claiming to be less stripping and there are a variety of humectants and emollients like Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate and Squalane. Arginine, Aloe Barbadensis Extract and Red Algae Ferment are added to provide antioxidant and soothing benefits. Other than that only the Radish Root Ferment Filtrate caught my eye, probably used as natural preservative.

As expected you get a blend of different oils paired with Coco-Caprylate responsible for that dry oil feel. Different oils claim different skin benefits, but their main purpose is to smooth the skin.

Do they live up to their claims?

Some.

There are claims in these products that I can’t judge, like „promote cellular regeneration on a deeper level„. Both are hydrating and leave the skin soft and subtle though, which is what I expected them to do.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend the Nerra Body Wash and Dry Body Oil to?

These are definitely an investment and not a necessity, aimed at those that want to indulge in their body care, and with their price tag way above what I am willing to pay for something I use on a daily basis. If you want to try one of them, I would suggest the oil. Yes, it is more pricey, but it is also the one that gives the more luxury feel. Maybe it would be different had I picked the scented version, but a body wash never really feels luxurious to me in a way a body oil does.

Regarding the full bathhouse experience, I can’t really say – I would have needed to try everything from the line to be able to judge that as the exfoliation is a key part of the whole process.

Both are suitable for all skin types with the exception of those that need medicated body care due to active eczema or atopic dermatitis.
