Finding a sunscreen that offers reliable protection and looks good on the skin is harder than it should be — especially once your skin becomes a little less forgiving.
The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air-Fit Suncream Plus is marketed as a lightweight, non-nano mineral sunscreen with added soothing ingredients and no white cast. On paper, that sounds like a solid everyday option.

In reality, mineral sunscreens often come with specific trade-offs — in texture, finish, and how they interact with drier or more mature skin.
In this review, I’ll look at how this one performs when used as intended: in the right amount, under real-life conditions, and on skin that isn’t perfectly smooth or perfectly hydrated.

What the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air Fit Suncream Plus claims

A non-nano physical sunscreen that blocks UV rays, while simultaneously brightening the skin. This sunscreen can be worn all year long without feeling heavy or leaving a white cast.

Facts about the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air Fit Suncream Plus

Prize and size

Compared to the other sunscreens from the brand I have reviewed, this one does not come in a tube with a pump, but rather in a bottle with a screw off lid. It contains 50 ml and is available for 17,95 € on the website here. The bottle has a brown cap, maybe indicating to the fact that it is tinted.

Texture and smell

After trying this one simultaneously to others from the brand, I expected a heavier texture in the one called Air Fit Plus opposed to the one called Air Fit Light. But while this is a cream and not a lightweight lotion, I don’t find it to be an heavier than the one called Light, both have typical cream texture. As you can see in the picture below it has a slight tint, a light brown, somehting you’ll often find in purely mineral formulas to offset the white cast. It also has a strange scent, floral with some spicy undertones, probably from one of the plant oils it contains.

How to use the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air Fit Suncream Plus

Sunscreen goes on as last step in your morning routine, either before makeup or, in case of tinted options, instead of a foundation. It is important that you apply enough to get the promised protection. Quite often people apply less than the recommended amount, which leads to a cosmetically more pleasing result, but sacrifices protection. So if you hear different opinions online as to if there is a white cast or not, make sure to check how much the person talking did apply – if it is a fraction of the recommended amount, their results will probably differ from the ones you get.

For me applying two fingers worth of product made my face noticeably lighter (and I am already quite pale, so this is probably worse on deeper skin tones). It didn’t look as ghostly-white as the typical white cast would, but gave my face a greyish tint that made me look dead. Especially warmer undertones will struggle with that.

In terms of texture, this is heavier product, which is why I preferred using it in the colder months. During summer it would have been too much to tolerate. The upside is that it is quite hydrating and wore nicely throughout the day if you ignored the weird color it gave. Sadly, reapplication didn’t work, but lead to pilling, and the same happened when I tried to apply makeup on top. The initially slightly dewy finish dried down more matte and had a tendency to enhance dry patches I had despite feeling hydrating.

This is a purely inorganic aka mineral filter sunscreen, which explains the white cast that is only partially covered by the added color. The filters used are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, the latter paired with Aluminium Hydroxide as protective coating. (More info: Mineral, chemical, physical – the different sunscreen filters explained)
As additional skin beneficial ingredients you have Centella Asiatica Extract as well as its active components, then Niacinamide and several plant oils that are meant to improve the texture and counteract the drying effect inorganic filters can have. (More info: The benefits of Centella Asiatica in skincare explained and The benefits of Niacinamide in skincare explained)

Among these oils is Bergamot Fruit Oil, which isn’t the most obvious choice as some citrus oils can with UV exposure cause skin pigmentation. The risk for that obviously depends on concentration and formulation, so I personally wouldn’t worry, but wanted to point it out.

Is mineral sunscreen the safer option for your skin?

Now you might have read that people with sensitive skin or acne should opt for mineral (aka inorganic) sunscreen filters as the chemical (aka organic) ones are tolerated worse, but that is no longer true. More modern filters (that you should reach for anyway as they usually offer better UVA protection) are very well tolerated even on skin prone to reactions. They are also safe from a toxicity standpoint and safe for melasma, so there is really no need to opt for all-mineral formulas if you have access to other sunscreen options.

Does it live up to its claims?

Some of them.

It is a non-nano mineral sunscreen, that much is true, and it could depending on your skin type and the climate you live in be worn year round. It does however have a noticeable white cast if the proper amount is applied.

How does it compare to…

SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen

This one is a hybrid sunscreen, meaning it combines mineral and chemical filters and in theory I should prefer that. In reality this one though is even worse than the Air Fit one. It has an even stronger white cast and the white pigment has the tendency to settle into any lines or pores, making you look pale and patchy. The texture is similar between the two, so if you really want one of them, I’d suggest the Air Fit one. But if you ask me, I wouldn’t use either of them.

SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water Fit Sun Serum

Before you accuse me of having a negative bias against the sun products SKIN1004 releases, let me introduce you to the one I have featured in my yearly favorites for three years straight: the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+. It is a product using only organic (chemical) filters, which is probably the explanation why I get along so well with it. The texture is light, hydrating enough to be used instead of a moisturizer during the summer and the finish very natural, making it a great choice for those that don’t want to be overly dewy. (Me!)

I honestly don’t find fault in this product and usually finish four tubes of it during a year on average. Works well under makeup, could be reapplied (even though I tend to use a different one for that), never pilled on me, good UVA protection and is affordable. Out of all three options shown here, this is the one I recommend you get

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend it to?

You probably have guessed it, I surely would not repurchase. I don’t like the more hydrating texture, the white cast or the look of this sunscreen on my face. If you don’t have dry patches, but aren’t oily either and are looking for something that lightens the skin, it might work better for you, but anyone with more mature skin will probably look a little dull and flaky when wearing it. And please, don’t just use less of it because that looks better. To get adaequate protection, you need the adaequate amount. If you don’t use that, you are better off with another product.
