Can a Centella Asiatca Ampoule really calm irritation, layer seamlessly with actives like Tretinoin, and support dehydrated skin without feeling heavy? The SKIN1004 Centella Asiatica Ampoule promises gentle hydration and barrier support — but is it effective enough to make a difference even for dry skin?

Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients, texture, and who it actually works for.

What the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule claims

All rounder ampoule with great qualities for redness and irritation relief, including high quality Madagascan Centella Asiatica extract.

It is one of the six ampoules available from the brand, all of which contain Centella Asiatica, but at varying concentrations and with a varying skin concern they target. I have talked about all of them on here, with the exception of the three newest ones called “Boosting Shot Ampoules” that I don’t have in my collection – yet.

Facts about the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule

Prize and size

There are three different sizes available, 30 ml, 55 ml and 100 ml, with the 100 ml one being available for 12,99 € on the website here. It is a see through bottle with a pipette that works great in picking up product.

Texture and smell

While still in the bottle, the liquid has a beautiful, golden hue, but once outside the packaging it is completely see-through and without any noticeable scent. That paired with the runny texture makes it look and feel like water. Applied to the skin there is minimal tackiness that disappears quickly.

How to use the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule

Now if you are confused in which place of your routine an ampoule should go, you are not alone. The answer is: It depends. Should you do the whole lineup with toner, ampoule, serum, it is cleansing, toner, then ampoule and then serum. If you like me and especially in summer, prefer a more streamlined approach, put it after cleansing and before your sunscreen wherever it fits best. As a rule of thumb, the runnier something is, the earlier it is used. (More info: Toner, Tonic, Ampoule – What is the difference?)

This one will work both morning or night or even twice a day and can be paired with actives like Tretinoin or acid exfoliants. Here the soothing aspect will be especially helpful.

Now you might have read online that while many people love it withe their actives, others report a burning sensation or even breakouts. First of all, you can react to anything. Just because something is supposed to be soothing, that doesn’t mean your skin will not react to it – if you are sensitive to Centella or its components, the product is definitely not for you. Always patch test to be sure. And second: If you have overdone it with the actives and your skin barrier is already compromised, anything you put on top might burn and sting. The solution here isn’t to experiment with new stuff, but to give your skin a break and let it recover. (More info: The 5 steps to heal a damaged skin barrier)

Ingredients of the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule

Hover the mouse over an ingredient for short explanation. Read more on INCIDecoder.
The ingredient list in this one is short and sweet: You will find Glycerin as humectant, Butylene Glycol that also has humectant properties and the Centella Asiatica, known for soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. (More info: The benefits of Centella Asiatica in skincare explained) Unlike other SKIN1004 products this only has the Centella Asiatica Extract, not the individual active components of said extract added separately on top.

Then there are viscosity enhancers and a preservative, so really a simple and straightforward formulation.

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

Especially as the claims are very vague. It had components that will help with redness and irritation – if it helps with YOUR redness and irritation though depends on the underlying cause.

How does it compare to…

Another one that claims to calm the skin, but is marketed more toward acne than the Centella Ampoule is, probably because of the potential antiseptic effect of the added Tea Tree Extract. Both feel very similar on the skin, lightweight and hydrating, but the Tea Trica one has a more herbal scent to it. If one is better for acne prone skin than the other isn’t something I can say, to me they work interchangeably and are easiest distinguished by color and scent rather than by performance.

Compared to the Centella Ampoule, this one isn’t hydrating at all, and probably targeted at a much younger audience. It claims to help with pore size, both by the addition of Hymalaian Salt that is supposed to absorb oil as well as by a variety of peptides aiming to increase collagen production. If it really makes a difference though, I can’t really say – I tend to get my peptides from a targeted serum. Out of all the ampoule varieties, this one is my least favorite. I guess I am too old for it.

I found it a bit too thick to work great with a dropper

SKIN1004 Centella Probio-Cica Intensive Ampoule

This is the one probably aimed at people my age: It is richer than the others, almost like a milky lotion rather than the watery texture the rest of the ampoules have in common. It is again soothing, with Panthenol, Niacinamide and Centella, and also fetures fermented ingredients for some extra skin benefitss. For me it is a favorite during winter as much as I like the Centella one during the heat.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule to?

The SKIN1004 Centella Asiatica Ampoule  is great for adding a lightweight layer of hydration that absorbs quickly and works well both morning and night and paired with different stronger actives in your routine. My skin felt soothed and calm when I had this in my routine. If your skin is dry and dehydrated though, this one alone will not be enough to provide hydration as it lacks emollients and occlusives to keep the hydration inside the skin. In my opinion, this is a great addition to a routine for oily and acne-prone skin due to the lightweight texture. If your skin is more mature, I can see it working great during the summer months as hydrating layer or with the addition of something heavier on top for the rest of the year.
