You know I have a weakness for what I like to call “office sunscreens”, these cosmetically elegant, usually Asian formulas that are comfortable to wear and work well under makeup. I have a few in my sunscreen wardrobe and the latest addition is the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+ PA ++++. SKIN1004 are sponsoring the video linked underneath, and you might remember I have worked with them in the past, but never tried any of their sunscreen formulas – there are four in total, with the Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum being the newest addition.

But without further ado, let’s see if it could convince me. We all know I am a bit of a sunscreen snob.

What the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum claims

A non-nano chemical sunscreen that blocks UV rays, while simultaneously hydrating the skin. Leaves skin with a moisturized, dewy finish.

Facts about the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum

Prize and size

One tube contains 50 ml and is available for 19 $ on the website here. The packaging is plain and functional, although I am not sure if the pump will be able to get every little bit out – we will see that when I actually finish my tube.

Texture and smell

Despite being called a serum, this has the texture of a light cream, spreads easily without tugging on the skin and has no white cast, at least none that I with my fairly pale skin would notice. There is no noticeable scent, not even the slightly herbal whiff I get from some of their other skincare that, I assume, comes from the added Centella Asiatica and Baby Green Complex that we will take a look at later. (More info: Everything you need to know about Centella Asiatica in skincare)

The texture is firmer than I would expect from something called serum.

How to use the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum

Sunscreen goes on as last step in your routine and this one is no exception. If your skin is normal to oily, you can easily use this instead of a moisturizer in the mornings as it is very hydrating on its own.
There is no stickiness after application and I didn’t experience any pilling throughout the day. A minor complaint is that the pump doesn’t dispense a lot of product at once, so to get to the recommended amount I needed eight pumps in total.

Despite claiming to give a dewy finish, I actually found it looked pretty natural on my skin. With a little bit of added glow of course, but not as dewy as others I have tried, which is a huge plus in my books, I really don’t like the glazed donut look.

When I reapplied throughout the day, that didn’t feel uncomfortable either, so you can absolutely use it for top ups as well. I did notice that after the third time reapplying I could occasionally get some pilling when I was wearing makeup on top, so keep that in mind – to be fair, I usually don’t reapply my sunscreen that often. Looking at the most important part of any sunscreen first: The filters. Here you’ll find Uvinul A Plus, offering high UVA protection and photostability, then Uvinul T 150, which offers UVB protection, Tinosorb M, known to give both UVA and UVB protection and lastly Uvasorb HEB for again UVA and UVB protection. (More info: Chemical and mineral sunscreen – What is the difference?)
As humectants there is Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide as added skin beneficial ingredient and 9800 Ppm Centella Asiatica Extract. I have talked about the benefits of Centella Asiatica Extract in skincare in depth in another blogpost already, but in short it is hydrating, an antioxidant, antiinflammatory and probably even stimulating collagen production. (More info: Benefits of Niacinamide in skincare and Hyaluronic Acid – More than a humectant?)

Now for the Baby Green Complex I mentioned earlier. It refers to seven different sprout extracts (Eruca sativa, Camellia sinensis, Wheat, Alfalfa, Camellia Japonica, Broccoli and Ginkgo biloba, to be precise) that are created through a cryogenic extraction method, probably aiming to preserve the nutrients optimally.

Actual UVA and UVB protection rating of the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum

SKIN1004 has published the results of the sunscreen testing done by the Korea Dermatology Research Institute where the UVB protection was determined to be SPF 50.5 +/- 7.1 and the UVA protection equivalent to PFA 16,56 +/- 2.69.

You might remember from my blogpost on UVA protection rating that there are different ways it can be rated, but a PFA of just above 16 means it qualifies for the highest protection rank, but is in the lower spectrum there. (More info: What is UVA-protection and how is it measured?)

It still is enough for everyday use, but I as someone that has some hyperpigmentation would probably reach for something with a higher PFA if I were to go to the beach or on a hike where I spend prolonged periods of time outdoors in the sun. As “office sunscreen” though it is perfectly fine. (More info: The different types of hyperpigmentation explained)

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum to?

As you can probably tell, I am very happy with this sunscreen, especially with the natural finish and lightweight texture and can absolutely see myself repurchasing it in the future.
It should also work for all skin types ranging from oily – those will appreciate the finish – all the way to dry, who might want to combine it with a moisturizer for added hydration.
