The packaging of the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Poremizing Light Gel Cream reminds me of a board game my daughter used to love. It was called “Unicorn Glitterluck”, in which 4 unicorns had to escape a rain cloud by sliding over rainbows and getting distracted by eating muffins. Why? Because I wonder if people that never outgrow their glittery unicorn phase are what this packaging is aiming for.

My daughter – luckily – outgrew her passion for this game at the age of seven, great news for me that despises board games in general, but had a very strong aversion against this one in particular.

Despite bringing back bad memories, what did I think of the cream?

What the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Poremizing Light Gel Cream claims

A light cream with a gel texture, designed to give instant cooling and deep hydration to the skin, leaving it smooth with a dewy finish.

Texture and smell

What I found surprising is that the gel isn’t clear, but has a (very light) brownish color. Not to a point where it changes your skin tone, but still, I had expected it to be clear or, given the packaging, slightly pink. There is no noticeable scent.

How to use the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Poremizing Light Gel Cream

How you best use it depends on your skin type. It could be used both morning or night and will for those with rather oily skin work as lightweight moisturizer. If your skin is normal, combination or even dry, it will most likely not be enough as only product though.

I could layer it underneath my hydrating sunscreens even on the hotter days we experienced so far, and my skin is combination. While the light texture feels refreshing upon application, I didn’t find it to provide a lot of hydration and it left my skin medium tacky. Unlike other tacky gel creams though I had no issues with it pilling when layered underneath something else.

Like all SKIN1004 products, this one has Centella Asiatica Extract as first ingredient and the Mineral Salts, according to the brand Pink Himalayan Salt and signature ingredient for this line, also present, but right at the end of the ingredient list. (More info: The benefits of Centella Asiatica in skincare explained)

You will find Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid for hydration, a variety of plant extracts for antioxidant benefits and Niacinamide to brighten the skin and regulate sebum production. More skin beneficial ingredients are Adenosin for wound healing and Panthenol for soothing. There is also Allantoin, also soothing and Kaolin, but both way down the ingredient list. Does it live up to its claims?

Only some.

It is a light gel cream that has an instant cooling effect, but I didn’t find it to be hydrating in the slightest.

How does it compare to…

Murad Nutrient Charged Water Gel

This is a silicone based gel cream, which makes it beautiful for oily skin, but can also lend itself to pilling when paired with certain other products. Still, I much prefer it in texture and effect on my skin and while it lacks Centella Asiatica and the Pink Himalayan Salt when compared to the SKIN1004 option, it makes up for this in peptides. It is (not only due to the much higer price point) a valid option for more mature skin looking for a lightweight gel cream.

This one is really pink, and has a noticeable artificial watermelon fragrance, somthing that would have gone well with the SKIN1004 packaging. The Glow Recipe moisturizer was a surprisingly good product though and one that I’d prefer over the SKIN1004 cream as it is more hydrating with less tackiness while still being lightweight. It lacks the Centella Asiatice, but contains Licorice Root Extract aiming to target hyperpigmentation.

Geek and Gorgeous Hydration Station

This is a silicone and Hyaluronic Acid free formula. Not that there is anything wrong with either, but it is uncommon to find in lightweight products. I much prefer formula and the hydration it gives over the SKIN1004 version, especially as it doesn’t add any glow to the face, something I always appreciate.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Poremizing Light Gel Cream to?

I admit I was underwhelmed by the SKIN1004 Poremizing Light Gel Cream, and that not only because of the pink glittery packaging. I am certain that I am not the target audience though and would think it is targeted at teenage skin, for which it could work well if they are oily and live in a more hot and humid climate.
