Tone-up sunscreens like the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen are having a moment — especially those that promise brightening, evening out, and healthy-looking skin without the need for foundation. And on paper, that sounds almost perfect: sun protection, skincare benefits, and a more rested look, all in one step.

But in real life, especially on mature or more textured skin, the actual results often don’t quite live up to that. I have tried quite a few that have left me looking oddly pale or even slightly grey. Or that have emphasized any unevenness and dry patches.
The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen is marketed as a soothing, brightening hybrid sunscreen with Centella, niacinamide, and tranexamic acid — clearly aimed at people who want more than just UV protection.
And I really expected to like it. On paper, both the claims and the ingredients sound great. But more important is how a product behaves, especially when you use the amount you’re actually supposed to use.

What the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen claims

A tinted sunscreen that helps brighten and tone dull and wrinkled skin that has lost its vibrancy and elasticity. With high UVA & UVB grade protection, this is sun care that revitalizes.

Facts about the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen

Prize and size

One tube contains 50 ml and is available for 17,95 € on the website here. I love the pump packaging as it is easy to use and you get the same amount with each application. You don’t need to measure or eyeball, you can just count the pumps.

Texture and smell

From what I had seen on the website, I expected something peachy, but in person it looked more of a light brown. The texture is lightweight and there is no noticeable scent.

How to use the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the last step of your skincare routine in the mornings and goes on before you apply your makeup. In this case, the goal for me was to be able to skip makeup and only rely on the evening out of the sunscreen, like wearing a tinted moisturizer. With the protection, of course, which means you’d need to apply enough. I measured it out and found six pumps to be enough if I wanted to cover my face and neck – four would be enough if you just went for the face.

The suncreen feels very comfortable on the face, it isn’t overly hydrating, but not drying either, but sadly it looks absolutely awful. I linked the video above so you can see for yourself, but despite me being quite light to begin with, it made me look ghostly. Ghostly to a point where despite warming it up with bronzer people would ask me if I was sick when I left the house. And even worse, over the course of the day the white pigment would settle into my lines and pores, so I didn’t just look pale, I would look pale and patchy.

Now before you tell me I did use too much product and that was why it looked that way: I didn’t. I used the amount necessary to get the protection claimed on the bottle, because it is first and foremost a sunscreen. One pump definitely looked better, at least initially , but one pump also meant that I was basically going outside without adaequate sun protection. (More info: How much sunscreen do you really need?)

Now if you like the pale appearance (I know it is popular among some people), you might want to know how this product behaves when you actually reapply during the day: More uneven, more pale, basically the downsides amplified.

And underneath makeup? That way you could counteract the paleness by applying foundation in the right color on top. Again, it worked initially, but depending on the type of base used on top was prone to  pilling and, again, got more and more uneven as the day went by.

Where does this strong white cast come from?

The product is a hybrid sunscreen, meaning it combines both organic (aka chemical) and anorganic (aka physical) filters. And anorganic (or physical) filters are known for their white cast, it has to do with the way they reflect light, so I assume the Titanium Dioxide is to blame here. The organic (or chemical) filters used here are Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus), Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150) and Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone (Uvasorb HEB), a mixture offering good broad spectrum protection. (More info: Chemical, physical, mineral – sunscreen filters explained)

From the skincare side of things you’ll find Glycerin and Sodium Hyaluronate for hydration, Adenosine for wound healing and fighting inflammation, and Centella Asiatica Extract, the ingredient the brand is built around, again for its anti-inflammatory purposes. (More info: The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid in skincare explained and The benefits of Centella Asiatica in skincare explained)

To support the brightening claim, the sunscreen contains Niacinamide and Tranexamic Acid. (More info: The benefits of Niacinamide in skincare explained and The benefits of Tranexamic Acid in skincare explained)

Does it live up to its claims?

Well…

It does definitely brighten the skin in the short term, if you associate bright with white. It will also, when used with the proper amount, help fight hyperpigmentation in the long run mainly by reducing the trigger and maybe also through the added ingredients.

How does it compare to…

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air-Fit Suncream Light

This is a sunscreen using only anorganic (or physical) filters, so it was clear from the start it wouldn’t be my favorite. Surprising enough, it still worked better than the Tone-Up one. The texture here is richer, way more heavy than I expected from a product called Air-Fit Light, but that might be good for those with drier skin. Given that only anorganic (physical) filters are used, I expected more of a white cast, but while it was there initially, it settled over the course of ten minutes and afterwards was only noticeable around the hair line. Keep in mind that I have quite light skin to begin with, if you have a deeper skin, it might give you more of a noticeable white cast. Reapplying it was possible, but often led to pilling and in general felt a little suffocating due to the richer texture.

My main issue with this one though is the SPF of only 30. We all know that even if we try, we usually apply too little of our sunprotection product of choice, which leads to the actual protection being even lower than the one advertised on the bottle. So if the texture is heavy, the product gives some white cast AND the protection is only 30, we’ll most likely end up with even less than that, meaning it isn’t enough for someone like me that is concerned about their hyperpigmentation. Even more so as anorganic (physical) filters don’t protect as well against UVA radiation as the more modern organic (chemical) ones do.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum

By now you might be under the impression that I simply don’t get along with the sun products SKIN1004 releases, so let me introduce you to the one I have featured in my yearly favorites for three years straight: the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+. It is a product using only organic (chemical) filters, which is probably the explanation why I get along so well with it. The texture is light, hydrating enough to be used instead of a moisturizer during the summer and the finish very natural, making it a great choice for those that don’t want to be overly dewy. (Me!)

I honestly don’t find fault in this product and usually finish four tubes of it during a year on average. Works well under makeup, could be reapplied (even though I tend to use a different one for that), never pilled on me, good UVA protection and is affordable. Out of all three options shown here, this is the one I recommend you get.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend it to?

I actually expected to like this one, as it is a hybrid rather than a pure inorganic sunscreen and has a few interesiting ingredients that might support in brightening the skin – I already have Niacinamide in my routine, but Tranexamic Acid sin’t something I actuvely look out for, so it would have been a nice addition – but as you might already have guesses, I just can’t bring myself to wear it. I also struggle to find a skin type I would recommend it to: The white cast will be noticeable on even the palest of complexions (unless you don’t use enough, which defeats the purpose) and the patchiness won’t look flattering on anyone either.

If you actually tried and liked the product, I would be interested in hearing how you perceived it, after all skincare preferences differ in different people.
