It was a little over three years ago that I started using my first skincare device, the Currentbody LED Face Mask Series 1, and over time I have added radiofrequency, micro current and (the most recent) micro needling to the things I do on a regular basis.

Time for the yearly check-in: Which devices do I use now, three years later? How has my skin changed over the last three years? And how do I fit everything in my routine?

Let’s talk.

Disclaimer

First the obvious disclaimer: No at-home device will give you drastic changes or make you age in reverse. If you have a treatment professionally done, it will most likely have a higher impact as the main objective of at home devices is not maximum output, but maximum safety.

And second: You will only ever see subtle results if you keep using your devices regularly. If you can’t commit to the admittedly time intensive schedule, you are better off saving your money.

And the last one for those that haven’t been around here in the past: I am 46 years old and grew up way before sun protection was a thing. My childhood and adolescence was spent with SPF8 if on holiday and you can definitely see the traces of careless sun exposure on my face. In addition to that I have (so far) never had botox, fillers or any other procedure done on my face – what you see is genetics, skincare and at home devices.

Which skincare devices do I use in 2025?

I mentioned before that I started my skincare device journey with the Currentbody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask (full review here) in March 2022 and was faithful to it despite trying many others until they released the Currentbdy Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 (full review here) – as good as the old one, but with a few improvements, so the Series 2 is the one I am reaching for regularly now. A newer addition is the corresponding Currentbody LED Neck and Decollete Mask (full review coming soon) they send me earlier this year and that I am still in the process of testing.

For micro current I started with the NuFace Trinity (full review here) that I actually had for longer than the LED mask, but never used. It took me seeing the results of the face mask to finally commit to using that one as well. Over time I switched to the ZIIP, first the GX and then the Halo (full review here) one in early 2024, and that is the one I am still using right now. I compared NuFace and ZIIP in a previous post, but to be honest don’t think they are vastly different in effects. In the end it comes down to which one you prefer aesthetics-wise and which programs fit better in your routine.

Then I introduced radiofrequency through the Currentbody Skin RF Radiofrequency Skin Tightening Device (full review here) in 2023 and while I have tried others like the NEWA+ (full review here) over time, it is still the one I keep coming back to. It is quite time consuming in the beginning, as one session takes me a little over an hour, but once you reach maintenance phase it gets easier to keep up with.

And the newest addition, although strictly speaking not really a device, but more of a procedure, is the Qure Microinfusion Set (full review here).

I have been opposed to at-home microneedling for the longest time because

a) I think the roller you can buy can lead to bad injures and

b) I just don’t believe you can cleanse them properly at home so the risk of infection is higher than I am willing to take

This set with a stamping device and a fresh head for every procedure made me finally try it. I did a three months course and initially wasn’t sure if I would keep it up, but then got so many compliments on my skin both from friends and strangers that I decided to keep it up. I have just started doing it again after a three months break, so I don’t think you will notice much in the before and afters.

How do I combine these devices into a routine?

Listing them all sounds like a lot, and yes, they are an investment in time, but as you don’t do all of them daily, it is actually not that hard to fit them into your routine. If you make a plan, that is, but you know me. I do love making a plan.

The first thing I do in the mornings after I get up is doing a quick session with the ZIIP Halo. It comes preloaded with a 4 minute session that I enjoy, but there are plenty of others you can do in less than ten minutes, which is a good amount of time to spend on things like that in my opinion – in all honesty, I wouldn’t get up an hour early just to use skincare devices! While I don’t struggle using it during the work week, I often forget on the weekends when I don’t have an alarm, which means I use it on average five times a week.

In the evenings I use the Currentbody LED Light Therapy Face Mask Series 2, recently paired with the corresponding neck and decollete mask, which takes 10 minutes and can be done right after removing your makeup and cleansing the skin. A great way to unwind before bed. I aim for five nights a week which usually works out well as there are two evenings that I get home kind of late form sports and don’t want to sacrifice even ten minutes of precious sleep.

These two are the only ones I use daily-ish, as with the radiofrequency device I am in the upkeep phase, meaning I need to use it every 3-4 weeks. I usually do it on a lazy Sunday afternoon while watching a show, as treating my whole face takes around 70 minutes, which isn’t something I can commit to more often.

In about the same time frame I do the microneedling, every 3-4 weeks, but on a Saturday and not on a Sunday to give my face time to recover. Recommended is every other week, but I can’t keep that up now that I am beyond the initial testing phase as to use it safely, I can’t use it the same weekend I use my radiofrequency device and I can’t use it if I plan on doing something on Sunday that requires me wearing makeup, and even if I am not someone that has a very busy social life, there are things coming up that I don’t want to attend with a face full of redness.

As you can see, that makes 15-20 minutes on a daily with the occasional extra hour every other week – completely manageable.

What are the differences between the devices?

Now why do I use so many different ones and don’t stick to just one to give me the results I want? Because in theory, they all have a slightly different mechanism of action.

LED light therapy for the skin claims to reduce inflammation and help with wound healing due to an increase in collagen and elastin production triggered by activating the cells responsible for that. The masks that also use blue light are supposed to help with acne in addition to that. (More info: The benefits of LED Light Therapy for the skin explained)

Microcurrent devices work by stimulating the muscles, meaning they prevent the muscle loss that occurs with age and leads to sagging due to lack of volume. They also claim to increase collagen production by increasing the amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell’s main energy source, which fuels many cellular processes. However, the data on that is quite vague. (More info: The benefits of microcurrent for the skin explained)

Radiofrequency on the other hand heats up the tissue underneath the skin’s surface, thus creating a wound and breaking down collagen, which in return leads to a repair process triggered that results in more collagen to reduce the one initially broken down and to tightening of the targeted layers due to the healing. Ultrasound and High Frequency do basically the same, so while there are different devices for that, I stick to one and that is radiofrequency. (More info: The benefits of radiofrequency for the skin explained)

And lastly, microneedling. Microneedling basically means you take tiny needles and poke holes in the skin, ideally penetrating the stratum corneum. This physical trauma induces a wound healing cascade with recrution of platelets and neutrophils that release growth factors like TGF-alpha, TGF-beta and platelet derived growth factor, which in the end result in stimulation of the fibroblasts to produce new collagen. The mechanism is quite similar to radiofrequency that also sets a trauma by heating up the tissue to stimulate collagen production, but the trauma is a different one. (More info: The benefits of microneedling for the skin explained)

You see it makes sense to combine different ones with different mechanisms – it might be redundant for radiofrequency and microneedling to address your concerns from several different angles.

Have I noticed changes in skin firmness, redness or elasticity? My 3 years before and after

I said it in the introduction: Changes are expected to be subtle and over the course of three years, life itself will inflict a few changes on a face that need to be taken into account.

Between the first clip, taken in the last throws of the pandemic, and the most current one I have lost 10 kg – another 5 kg compared to the check-in I did last year. That is bound to change my facial structures. And of course I have lived three years, full of holidays spent at the beach, but also filled with health scares in the family, work related stress, recently issues with sleeping through the night and the challenges that come with raising two children in a world that seems to get more unhinged every day. All that will have more effect than at home devices on what my face shows.

But with all that in mind, I can say that I am very happy with how my skin looks here. No drastic increase in deep set wrinkles, still quite firm around the jawline and neck and with some plumpness on the upper cheeks despite the weight loss. Do I look older than I did three years ago? Probably – the marionette lines are more prominent, the smile lines around my eyes extend further than they did three years ago. But I look in the mirror and like what I see, and that has been my goal all along.

I am curious: What do you think of my results? Do you think they are worth the time and money invested?

Which of the many devices is my favourite?

Looking at effects, the Currentbody RF Radiofrequency Skin Tightening Device is my favourite. I attribute the majority of the changes I experienced to this one. Maybe the Qure Microinfusion would come close, but despite deciding to keep using it, I still can’t name it a favourite because poking my face with tiny needles isn’t my idea of a fun evening.

Looking at comfort, ease of use and relaxation though, the Currentbody LED Light Therapy Face Mask Series 2 is still the one. Feeling like you take care of your skin by laying back on the couch for ten minutes is unbeatable.

The one I would ditch first is the microcurrent one. While I obviously can’t say which effect comes from which device, I don’t feel as if I had long lasting benefits from using it, even though I do appreciate the immediate lift it gives me.
