There was a time when mushrooms really had a moment in skincare. And no, I am not talking shrooms here that make you feel more positive about your situation, I am talking actual skincare ingredients like they are present in the Vegreen Skin Barrier Reishi Serum I want to talk about today.

The main claim here is strengthening the barrier, something I didn’t primarily associate with fungi, but as it is often the case when talking about a group of organisms that have a large variety (have you looked at the amount of different types there are?), the range of their effects is large as well.

What the Vegreen Skin Barrier Reishi Serum claims

Reishi Mushroom is known as the „Herb of Eternal Youth“, the Mushroom Extract is an ingredient that strengthens natural healthy skin barriers. Lactobacillus Ferment Extract maintains the oil and water balance on skin.

Facts about the Vegreen Skin Barrier Reishi Serum

Prize and size

One bottle of serum contains 50 ml and is available for 22,95 € on the website here. The bottle in my picture is the old packaging (this review has been a long time in the making), they repacked with a different writing and a slightly more seethrough bottle. It is vegan.

Texture and smell

This serum looks brownish in the bottle, but almost clear when pumped out on the hand, and is very runny. I did not notice any scent.

How to use the Vegreen Skin Barrier Reishi Serum

This product fits into your routine wherever you want to use it: morning, night time or even both, all you have to do is indentify where you’d think it would work best for you. As it isn’t tacky and pairs well with everything I combined it with, I have used it both morning and night, but my preferred way was at night before my Tretinoin as it contains Niacinamide.

One pump was enough for my face, two were needed if I wanted to cover my neck and chest as well. (More info: How to best take care of your neck and decollete)

Ingredients of the Vegreen Skin Barrier Reishi Serum

Hover the mouse over an ingredient for short explanation. Read more on INCIDecoder.
The serum contains three different mushroom extracts, one being the Reishi mushroom, the second one Silver Ear mushroom that acts as a humectant and the third one Chaga mushroom. I have seen both Silver Ear and Chaga used in other skincare products for their humectant and antioxidant properties, but the Reishi one is new to me. In which amount it is able to help strengthen the skin barrier I can’t say as I didn’t find any data to this claim.

The added Niacinamide though is often used for this purpose, and the different added fermented ingredients often claim barrier support too. (More info: The benefits of Niacinamide in skincare explained and The benefits of fermented ingredients in skincare explained)

Then there is Glycerin and Sodium Hyaluronate as humectants and a variety of fermented ingredients with their skin beneficial effects as well as Green Tea Extract as antioxidant and Niacinamide that also offers different positive effects for the skin. (More info: The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid in skincare explained, The benefits of fermented ingredients in skincare explained, The benefits of Niacinamide in skincare explained and The benefits of Green Tea Extract in skincare explained)

Does it live up to its claims?

As far as I can tell.

I mentioned already that I can’t comment if Reishi is particularly beneficial for the skin barrier, but the Niacinamide and Lactobacillus Ferment Filtrate would be enough to make these claims already.

Vegreen Nature Mucin Serum Review
Vegreen Nature Mucin Serum

Vegreen Nature Mucin Serum

Although it doesn’t contain any mushrooms, the Nature Mucin Serum is one that I enjoy using when I feel like my barrier could use a little help – in winter basically. It combines Niacinamide with Panthenol and Ceramides and also has a variety of peptides thrown in the mix – including my favorite, which is Copper peptides. While I enjoy both, I would probably repurchase the Nature Mucin one first.

You can read my full review of the Vegreen Nature Mucin Serum here.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend it to?

From my experience, this is a serum that would work for all skin types. If everyone needs it in their routine is a different question, but if you want hydration with a little extra, it is a nice one to have in your stash. As mentioned above I would probably repurchase the Nature Mucin one over this one, but enjoyed both of them very much.
