bareMinerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum – Curiosity kills the cat

Now I don’t own a cat, nor do I believe that cats are really killed by their curiosity.

But it makes a far more fetching title then: Why I never stick to my trusted products even though I know I might be disappointed and it isn’t the best for my bank balance.

I told you it isn’t a great blog post title. Sorry if you thought there´d be actual cats involved today.

What is involved though is a serum that claims to work with the “clock genes” in our skin to help it repair during nighttime, for maximized results: The bareMinerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum.

Which is exactly what my favorite serum, the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair II (Review here), claims to do. I have stated there already that I don’t believe in cells regenerating by the clock, but I was curious nonetheless.

What bareMinerals claims:

“Every cell in your body has a “clock gene” that regulates cellular renewal, which in turn affects the appearance of your skin. And it’s scientifically proven that cells are most efficient at healing during nighttime sleep.

Our intensive night serum helps restore your skin’s ability to reach its ideal renewal state. Powered by our proprietary ActiveSoil Complex–combined with a unique moisture boost technology–this formula maximizes cellular renewal and hydrates skin overnight. The result? Cells that are supercharged to protect you during the day and skin that looks firmer, healthier and younger.”

Facts:

Prize and size

One dark glass bottle with dropper contains 30 ml and retails for 50 $ here. I had a 15 ml trial size that lasted me around four months of (almost) daily use.

Texture and smell

The serum is a lovely honey color, lightweight without being too runny and sinks into the skin quickly. I don’t notice any particular scent.

Application and effects

Two drops are enough to cover my face and neck, maybe three if I want to take it really far down. There is no residue and it sinks in within seconds.

I liked the plumped effect it gave my skin, it worked really well at hydrating and nourishing.

Favorable ingredients:

  • Butylene Glycol: Humectant, helps skin lock in moisture
  • Propanediol: Increases penetration, moisturizing
  • Glycerin: Moisturizing
  • Xylitol: Increases ceramide production
  • Saccharomyces Ferment: Antioxydant
  • Syringa vulgaris leaf extract: Plant stem cells (no scientifically proven benefit!)
  • Zizyphus jujuba seed: Soothing
  • Phytoecdysteroids Extract: Antioxydant

  • Soil Minerals: To be honest, I don’t know where to put that one. There are minerals that are beneficial for the skin, there are minerals that aren’t, and soil is basically dirt. It could be anything from great to harmful to not effective at all. It is the “main player” in the bareMinerals range, just without any information available, something I really dislike. Of course the company states on their website that they choose the minerals and soil by the benefits and that they work great as antioxidants, but the scientist in me wants to know exactly what is in there.

Unfavorable Ingredients:

  • Fragrance (from natural origin)
  • Essential oils (Lavender and Orange, may be irritant)
  • PEG

Does it live up to its claims?

Some.

It gives a hydrating boost and contains some lovely antioxidants. As stated above I don’t believe in “clock genes” and I didn’t notice my skin cells to be “supercharged”, whatever that is supposed to mean.

Will I rebuy?

No.

Simply due to the fact that I really don’t like products where I can´t get enough information on the ingredients. The “Active Soil Complex” annoys me more than it is reasonable, but that is my personal problem.

Who do I recommend it to?

If you are less nerdy than I am and don’t need to know everything, that one is a lovely nighttime serum that might replace the above mentioned Estée Lauder ANR II, especially as it is a good deal more affordable.

If dehydration and oily skin are your main concern, this will be hydrating enough while still being lightweight.

Quite frankly, if you are less anancastic than I am, give it a go!
