Can the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash Cleanser Handle Makeup Removal? | Doctors Review

The review of the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash is one of the many that have been sitting unedited in my folder for an embarrassing length of time, in this case since April 2023. It is only now that I mentioned it again in a sponsored video I did with the brand on TikTok (you can watch it here if you are interested) that I remembered I had been meaning to publish it for the longest time, especially focussing on the question if it is suitable as only cleanse or needs to be paired with another cleanser.

You see, in the video I did on TikTok I used Vegreen products to build a skincare routine for traveling with as little products as possible, meaning I would usually bring a cleanser that can handle both makeup and water resistant sunscreen as well as rinses clean.

Sadly, the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash doesn’t fit into this category, I found it t struggle with makeup removal. Why I still enjoy it enough to be on my second tube is what I want to share in todays review.

Here is a video where I reviewed it for the first time back in 2023 alongside some other Vegreen skincare:

What the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash Cleanser claims

Rice extract gently cleanses your skin. This mild gel cleanser works on even sensitive skin types without chapping.

Facts about the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash Cleanser

Prize and size

One tube contains 150 ml and is available for 14 $ on the website here. Like all products from the brand it is vegan – my first contact with them was through their Nature Mucin Toner and Serum (review here), claiming to be a snail mucin alternative for vegans. (More info: The benefits of snail mucin in your skincare explained)

Texture and smell

If you picture a gel cleanser in your head, it will most likely be exactly what this product looks like: clear, gel texture that is more on the firmer side and that, when it comes in contact with water, creates a nice, lightweight lather. I do not notice any scent.

How to use the Vegreen Rice Facial Wash Cleanser

The instructions are the same as they are for other gel cleansers: Wet your face or add water to the cleanser you put in your hand, foam it up and massage it onto your skin. After massaging it in, rinse with water and you are done.

For me, it is a typical morning or second cleanse, as I don’t like it too much for removing my makeup. While it doesn’t sting my eyes, it just doesn’t get rid of the amount I wear on a daily basis well enough with one cleanse. It rinses perfectly clean without the need for a wash cloth and leaves the skin feeling fresh, but hydrated.

The main ingredient, even before water, is Rice Extract, claiming to be hydrating and brightening, and then a few mild surfactants. There are also a few amino acids and a few plant extracts like Centella Asiatica Extract and others paired with fermented ingredients and even Ceramide NP. (More info: The benefits of Centella Asiatica  in your skincare explained, The benefits of fermented ingredients in your skincare explained and The benefits of Ceramides in your skincare explained)

While you might argue that cleansers are wash off products, so most of that is going down the drain anyway, there are formulation techniques that allow the beneficial ingredients to stick to the skin, so I wouldn’t write them off entirely.

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

It is a mild cleanser that should work even on sensitive skin types (always patch test!) without being stripping.

How does it compare to…

Skintegra Melt Milk Cleanser

Another cleanser aimed at sensitive skin, but with an entirely different texture . This one starts as a gel, but turns into a milk rather than foams up, which makes for an interesting sensory experience. It is a lovely cleanser much better suited to removing makeup than the Vegreen one.

Murad Soothing Oat and Peptide Cleanser

This is a cleanser that meets every expectation I have when thinking about cleansers for sensitive skin: It is rich, nourishing and a cream. I love it especially in winter and would recommend it for skin that is sensitive and dry at the same time – if it is within your budget. It is the most expensive one on the list here for sure.

The Ordinary Glucoside Foaming Cleanser

A more budget friendly version that I would also recommend for those with more sensitive skins. It has a slightly thicker texture in the beginning, but also foams up nicely and leaves the skin feeling fresh, but not stripped. Just like the Vegreen option it has difficulties if you wear more than a light layer of makeup.

Would I repurchase and which skin types do I recommend it to?

As I said in the beginning, I am already on my second bottle. It is one of the basics every skincare routine needs – not extraordinary, but something you’ll never want to be without. Due to its nice foam and gentle cleanse, it will work for all skin types. If your skin is sensitive, I obviously recommend you patch test to see if your skin agrees with the plant extracts first, but apart from individual sensitivities it should be fine.
