It doesn´t happen that often these days that I need to watch a tutorial on how to apply a skincare product. I mean, not to tout my own horn here, but there isn´t much in terms of skincare that I am unfamiliar with.
I have experimented with acids and retinol, used multitasking as well as elaborate 10 step routines, but I admit I was a little at loss when I got the Avon Anew Instant Eye Smoother.
The first confusion: What is it? Skincare or rather a makeup item?
Then, shortly after: How am I supposed to use it?
Good thing that there is a handy little video on their website (as well as shockingly good results in the before and after pictures, but we will get to that later.)
So, let´s talk about the Avon Anew Instant Eye Smoother!
What Avon claims
Say hello to our Instant Eye Smoother, Avon’s biggest skincare launch of 2018, selling one every minute on day of launch. An under-eye cream that works to help banish the look of under-eye bags, puffiness and wrinkles – in just seconds. Plus it lasts all day, leaving you looking fabulous from morning to night.
Facts
Prize and size
One tube contains 15 ml and retails for 15,99 € on the website here.
Texture and smell
The Avon Anew Instant Eye Smoother has a gel like texture, no noticeable scent and feels cool upon application.
Application and effects
While a tad sticky at first, that feeling disappears within the first 60 seconds. You can feel the product tightening on your skin, nit uncomfortable, but noticeable. While I can see an effect in person (less noticeable in the pictures below), it only lasts for a few hours, so I tried reapplying it on top of my makeup.
Sadly that didn’t work at all, disrupting my concealer and base and making the undereyes look worse than before.
And yes, I promise that these are two different pictures, but while the effect is slightly more noticeable in person and close up, it is by far not as convincing as it is on the website. Might be that I am doing it wrong, I would love to hear from you if you had other experiences.
Ingredients
Favorable ingredients
- Propylene Glycol: Humectant, penetration enhancer
- Glycerin: Humectant
- Hydroxyethyl Urea: Humectant
- Urea:Humectant
Other ingredients
- Potassium Silicate: Filmformer
- Hydroxyethylcellulose: Lubricant, thickening
- Lithium Magnesium Sodium Silicate: Viscosity enhancer
- Phosphoric Acid: pH adjuster
- Phenoxyethanol: Preservative
- Polyimide-1: Filmformer
A few humectants for general plumping, but in my opinion the filmformers are the ingredients that deliver here, which is why I would classify it as makeup rather than skincare.
Does it live up to its claims?
No.
It does have an effect on my under eye appearance, making it slightly smoother and my wrinkles a bit less noticeable. This effect does not last all day on me though, in fact I don´t get more than 2-3 hours, which combined with the fact that it doesn´t work well reapplied on top of makeup, makes it not suitable as every day product.
Would I repurchase?
No.
I am a mother, my nights out are rare, so keeping a product like that just for the purpose of using it them seems too much. Should my life drastically change though and require me gracing the red carpet repeatedly, it would probably become a staple.
Who do I recommend it to?
Anyone that walks the red carpet! Joking aside, if you do have events where you need to look fresher, but don´t want to go the invasive route, the Avon Anew Instant Eye Smoother might be an option to consider.
For long term results though I recommend investing in a good eye cream like the Instytutum Anti-Wrinkle Brightening* one (Review) or one of the others below.
